Hi there and welcome, I’m Tom Poland.
Sometimes you simply have to “know when to hold and know when to fold” a.k.a. “if you can’t beat ‘em you’re really better to join ‘em”.
For over 15 years now I’ve been preaching the need to put marketing strategy ahead of marketing action.
And during those 15 years I’ve been pestered by people wanting to do it the other way around … marketing action first and then (maybe) strategy later. And for 15 years I’ve steadfastly said “no”.
But last week I caved …
One client said one sentence and that little light bulb in my head went “click”. And I changed by mind in a nano-second. I almost resent her for saying it but here’s what she said:
“I just want to get new clients walking into my business NOW and then I can relax knowing I’ve got enough cash flow… and THEN I’ll have both the time and money to get my strategy right”.
It was a BFO (blinding flash of the obvious).
Having done marketing for most of my life I immediately thought of a couple of ideas to give to get her started but I wanted more.

So I went into each of my two libraries and began to search for a course or a book that contained simple ways that a business owner can get new clients in the door in less than 30 days (continued below…)
I figured that the 30 day criteria was a short enough period to give my client what she wanted quickly but realistically long enough to get the job done.
So I searched through tens of thousands of dollars of courses, programs, books, DVD and CD sets and even old audio cassette packs that I’d bought over the years.
And after literally hours of searching guess what I came up with?
That’s right … a big fat nothing!
At least nothing that could satisfy my criteria of a simple way to get new clients into a business in less than 30 days.
So I went online and searched for the same thing.
Again, nada!
I can tell you that I was VERY surprised at this gaping hole in the market place!
Sure, there were bucket loads of great marketing articles online but none of them contained what I thought were truly effective and simple ways to get new clients in fast.
All of the suggested new-client strategies were either:
Too difficult – requiring a specific skill set that takes years to develop (public speaking, webinars, joint ventures, video production)
Took too much time (who wants to spend hours on social media marketing or blogging hoping to somehow miraculously make a sale?)
Too costly (radio, television and newspaper advertising)
Took too long to work (search engine optimization, host beneficiary, affiliate marketing, licensing, article marketing)
Too conceptual and NOT detailing a step by step system (like “get some referrals” or “write an advertorial” – yes, but how?????)
Required the use of high pressure and manipulative selling tactics or stressful cold calling
By contrast I had different criteria …
It had to require little or no money so that virtually everyone can afford it
It had to be proven to work so every minute invested gave a return on that time
And I wanted it to work fast so that once it was in place money would flow into the bank account within 30 days at the latest
It also had to be incredibly simple and easy to follow so that even if a trained monkey couldn’t quite manage it then a 12 year old child certainly could
Another criteria was that it needed to work for any type of business, regardless of industry or size
It had to be repeatable so that it could be used reliably and predictably, time and again, whenever new clients were needed
And finally, it had to be chock full of integrity and contain “zero-pressure” and definitely NO stressful cold calling (yuk!)

And who knows, maybe there’s something out there but I couldn’t find it.
